Geomorphology Flashcards
8 factors influencing water filtration:
- Level of water saturation in soil low=high filtration
- Area evaporation rate
- Slopes gradient
- Amount of rain and ground is hard/soft
- Density and type of plant cover
- Rock permeability
- Soil type
- Land use
4 types of rivers:
- Permanent/perennial
- Periodic/non-perennial
- Episodic
- Exotic rivers
7 drainage patterns:
- Dendrite
- Trellis
- Radial
- rectangular
- Deranged
- centripetal
- Parallel
Drainage density definition:
Total amount of length of streams per unit area of drainage basin
7 Factors influencing drainage density:
- Evaporation rates (high=low dd)
- Amount of rainfall (more=high dd)
- Infiltration rates (high=lower dd)
- Vegetation cover
- Slope/gradient
- Soil moisture
- Rock hardness and type
What texture is resulted by low,medium,high and super high dd:
Low=coarse texture
Medium=medium texture
High=fine texture
Super high=super fine
What is river discharge:
The amount of water flowing past a certain point at any given time in a river
Laminar v turbulent flow:
Laminate= water flowing in layers
No level change
Even river bed
Less erosion
High flow speed
Turbulent = opposite
The 4 erosion forces:
- Attrition
- Abrasian
- Hydronic action
- Suspension
5 important reasons why managing drainage basins are important:
- Store and protect water
- Wet land preservation
- Flood control
- Agriculture
- Preserves biodiversity
