Geomorphology Flashcards
Crust definition
A solid layer of rock on the surface of the planet between 3-30 miles thick
Mantle definition
A semi-liquid layer of magma or molten rock moving due to convection currents
Outer core definition
Liquid part of core that has a similar composition to the inner core
Inner core definition
The solid part at the center of the earth made of iron and nickel
Explain Continental drift
In 1912 German meteorologist Alfred Wegner proposed an idea that continents where once all joined to form a single landmass known as Pangea. Overtime this landmass split up to form separate continents
Why did Alfred Wegner believe in continental drift
- coast line of S.afr and S.ame have been found to fit almost exactly
2.Fossils of a particular fern have been found only in S.afr,S.ame,Aus and Ind
3.Rocks similar in composition to table mountain sandstone have also been found in S.ame
How many plates does earth have?
7 large and 7 minor rigid pieces called plates
How do plates move?
They move due to giant convection currents established in the mantle, when currents are pulling away from eachother they come apart and vice versa
What is the place where two plates meet called
A plate boundary
Crashing into each other
Convergent boundary or destructive boundary
Pulling into each other
divergent or constructive boundary
Side swiping
transform or transverse boundary
How do earthquakes happen?
Plate movements can cause cracks or faults in the earths crust. This creates vibrations commonly known as earthquakes
What is volcanism?
The process where molten magma from the mantle moves to the earths crust.
What is intrusive volcanism
When arising magma forms intrusions into the rocks of the earths crust.
