Geomorphological processes Flashcards
What are the 5 types of geomorphological processes?
- mass movement
- erosion
- weathering
- transportation
- deposition
Name the 3 types of sub-aerial weathering
- biological
- chemical
- mechanical
What is mechanical sub - aerial weathering?
When temperatures fluctuate can disintegrate or cause high pressure situation for rock leading it to crack.
What is an example of mechanical sub-aerial weathering?
Freeze-thaw
What is biological sub-aerial weathering?
When there’s an infiltration of animals or vegetation on the rock.
What is an example of biological sub- aerial weathering?
Plants scurrying into the cracks of rocks which can cause it to breakdown
What is chemical sub- aerial weathering?
A change in the molecular structure of rock.
What are the 4 sub categories of chemical sub-aerial weathering?
- oxidation
- hydration
- hydrolysis
- carbonation
What is geomorphology?
The study of nature and origin of landforms, and these processes of weathering and erosion that occur in the atmosphere and hydrosphere.
What is marine processes?
These are the processes that operate with the coastline connected with the sea.
What are sub-aerial processes?
Processes that wear down rock in situ - the rock never moves itself-. Includes weathering and mass movement.
What are 4 factors that can affect the rate of erosion?
- wave steepness and breaking point
- fetch
- lithology
- human activity
What are 5 of the erosional processes?
- hydraulic action
- wave quarrying (cavitation)
- Abrasion
- attrition
- solution
