Geomorphic Processes Flashcards
What is weathering?
Breakdown of rock but remain in situ (on site)
What is erosion?
The wearing away of rocks, removed
3 types of weathering
Chemical, Physical, Mechanical
When is mechanical weathering at its most significant?
Annual rainfall between 250-1250 mm
Temperature between -20 and -5 degrees
When is chemical weathering at its most significant?
Annual rainfall between 1250-2250mm
Temperature between 10-30 degrees
What is an Aeolian process?
A process involving wind, often blowing onto the shore
Erosive forces increase exponentially, velocity increases from 2 to 4 metres per second, 8x increase in erosion
What is a Fluvial process?
A process involving a river
Sediment added to river due to erosion and weathering
Deposits sediment as river reaches still body of water
What happens when fresh and salty water meet each other?
The particles clump together due to electrical charges
