Geometry - Unit 2 Flashcards
congruent
geometric figures that have the same shape AND size
Side Side Side (SSS) theorem
If three sides of one triangle are the same length as three sides of another triangle, then these two triangles are congruent.
Side Angle Side (SAS) theorem
Two triangles are congruent if two sides and the included angle of one are equal (or congruent) to two sides and the included angle of the other.
Angle Side Angle (ASA) theorem
Two triangles are congruent if a side and the adjacent angles of one are equal (or congruent), respectively, to a side and the adjacent angles of the other.
axiom
a statement or proposition which is regarded as being established, accepted, or self-evidently true
Addition Property of Equality
“If a = b, then a+c = b+c.” - if we add or subtract the same number to both sides of an equation, the sides remain equal.
Reflexive Property of Equality
“a = a, 3 =3” - a number is always equal to itself.
Addition axiom - If equals are added to equals, the sum is equal.
Subtraction Axiom
If equals are subtracted from equals, the difference is equal.
Addition Axiom
If equals are added to equals, the sum is equal.
Substitution Axiom
Quantities equal to each other may be substituted
proof
A proof is a given statement that proves a mathematical concept is true.
statement
first part of a geometric proof
reason
second part of a geometric proof
segment bisector
a point, a line, a ray, or a line segment that bisects another line segment into two equal parts
angle bisector
a line or ray that divides an angle into two congruent angles
