Geometry Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Segment
A finite section of line; The space between 2 endpoints
Between
On the line segment
Intersection
The common points; A point or set of points in both figures
Segment Addition Postulate
If B is between A and C, the AB+BC=AC
Ray
Consists of 1 endpoint (A) and all points that are on the same side of (A) as the other point (C). The endpoint is the 1st point named
Congruent
Same shape; same size (objects)
Congruent segments
Same/equal length
Midpoint of a segment
The point that divides one segment into 2 congruent segments
Bisector of a segment
A line, segment, ray or plane that intersects a segment at its midpoint
Postulates (Axioms)
Statements that are widely accepted as true without proof.
Opposite rays
Two rays on the same line that share a common endpoint
Collinear Points
Points all on one line
Coplanar Points
Points all on one plane
Length
The distance between 2 points
How to find the distance between 2 endpoints?
Either [Largest # - Smaller #] or [ |#-#| ]
How to find the coordinate of a midpoint?
Find the average of the endpoints coordinates
Definitions
These are given. Don’t make things up. Know the exact wording.
Properties
These are observable and also accepted without proof
Theorems
These are statements that require proof (a proof is a logical statement)
Midpoint Theorem
If B is the midpoint of line segment AC, then AB=BC , BC=1/2AC , AB=1/2AC
