Geometry Flashcards
Polygon
Two dimensional closed figure that is formed by joining three or more segments at their end points.
Irregular polygon
A polygon that is not regular.
Triangle
Three angles that are formed by three segments or sides.
Vertices
Three endpoints where the segments join (on the triangle).
Quadrilateral
Any closed figure with four right angles.
Parallelogram
Opposite sides are congruent and parallel.
Trapezoid
Exactly one pair of parallel sides.
Rectangle
A parallelogram with four right angles.
Rhombus
A parallelogram with four congruent sides.
Square
A parallelogram with four right angles and four congruent sides.
Circle
Consists of all points in a plane that are equal distant from a given point.
Radius
Any segment from the center point of the circle to any point on the circle.
Diameter
Any segment that passes through to the center point of the circle and has both endpoints on the circle.
Solids
Another name for a three-dimensional figure.
Polyhedrons
A three-dimensional shape having flat faces that meet along straight edges.
Non-polyhedrons
Solids which feature curved surfaces - which are missing a face, edge, or vertex.
Congruent polygons
Have the same size and shape. Corresponding shape and size are congruent
Similar polygons
Same shape but necessarily same size. Corresponding size lengths are proportional.
Line symmetry
A figure that can be folded over a line so that its’ two parts match exactly.
Tesselation
A set of repeating figures that fills a flat surface with no gaps or overlaps.
Coordinate plane
Used to represent ordered pairs and has a horizontal axis (called the x axis)and the vertical axis (called the y-axis).
Origin
Point where two axis intersect.
