Q

What is rotational system?

A

A shape has Rotational Symmetry when it still looks the same after some rotation (of less than one full turn).
Rotational Symmetry Order - write the number of turns

Q

What are the misconceptions?

A

Lines of symmetry on parallelograms e.g. thinking
there are 4 lines of symmetry in an oblong
• Regular Shapes – rotation – e.g. regular hexagon has 6 lines of symmetry
• Rather than draw a line of symmetry the child reflects in order to create one!
• Flags Symmetry Powerpoint – Beware!

Q

What activities can you set up along geometry?

A
  1. Write your full name in capital letters. Show lines of Reflective Symmetry.
  2. Look at the road signs and logos. Which have lines of Reflective Symmetry and, if so, how
    many lines?
  3. Look at the pattern blocks. Classify them by Order of Rotation

Q

What is congruence?

A

Definition – The relationship between two shapes that have all sides and angles the same (and arranged in the same way). Like the rectangle placed lying down and one standing up?

Q

What is translation?

A

Translation is when you slide the shape

Plotting Co-ordinates across 4 quadrants

Q

How would you work out translation?

A

Use squared paper. Draw 10 x 10 1st quadrant. Draw the following shape. (3,5), (4,3), (3,1), (2,3).
Practice translating shape (up, down, left or
right) and then do it by adding the same
amounts on to the x or y co-ordinates.
Translation – 6 units on x axis

Q

What is rotation?

A

Rotation– Anti-clockwise 90
Rotate the shape 90 degrees in the first quadrant from the point of origin
(0,0).
