geometrical concepts Flashcards
point
- location represented with a dot.
- name with a capital letter e.g A
line
- set of points that extend forever in two directions.
- two points define a line.
- name with two capital letters- the names of the two points that define the line e.g AB (line on the top)
- name with only one small letter e.g m (line on the top)
line segment
- parts of a line that has two fixed points, starting and ending point.
- name with two capital letters-the 1st letter is the starting point and the 2nd the ending point e.g AB (line on the top)
ray
- part of the line that has a fixed starting point and never ends.
- name with two capital letters-the 1st letter is the starting point e.g AB (with an arrow on the top )
angle
- two rays with common starting point creat and angle
- the rays are called sides or arms of the angle
- the common starting point is called vertex of the angle
- name with 3 capital letters - the middle letter is always the vertex
- name with only 1 capital letter - the vertex
- name with only 1 small letter - the angle
- we always put this symbol ^ on the top or this one < in the beginning.
intersecting lines
- lines that they have one point in common
perpendicular lines
- lines that intersect on a right angle
parallel lines
-lines that never intersect
straight angle
- 180
right angle
-90
acute angle
> 90 (less than a right angle)
obtuse angle
< 90 ( greater than a right angle)
revolution angle
one complete turn 360
scalene triangle
3 sides of different lengths
isosceles triangle
two sides are equal
equilateral triangle
three sides are equal
obtuse angle triangle
triangle with only 1 angle to be obtuse > 90
right angle triangle
triangle with only 1 angle to be right 90
acute angle triangle
triangle with all of the angles to be acute <90
angle bisector
A line, line segment ,ray that splits an angle into two equal angles.
(“Bisect” means to divide into two equal parts.)
perpedicular bisector
A perpendicular bisector is a line, line segment, ray which intersects another line perpendicularly and divides it into two equal parts.
