Geology Of Auckland (Lab 1) Flashcards
Learn the geology of Auckland and types of rocks
Sedimentary rock
Pieces of rock that have settled from water or when minerals are deposited by plants, animals etc. Layers
Metamorphic rock
Rocks that have been heated and condensed but not melted. Heat and pressure
Igneous Extrusive rock
Molten rock that’s flowed on the land’s surface or thrown into the air and then cooled.
Igneous Intrusive rock
Molten rock that has cooled while still underground.
Aggregate
Collection of particles
Cement
Minerals that bind to boundaries of other minerals
Compaction
Reduction of porosity as a force is applied to an aggregate
Basalt (extrusive and volcanic)
Fine grained, dark, igneous
Gabbro (intrusive and plutonic)
coarse grained, dark coloured, igneous
Granite (intrusive and plutonic)
fine grained, pink and grey, quartz
List some minerals that can be found in metamorphic rocks
Quartz, calcite, garnet, kyanite, staurolite, chlorite and andalusite
Slate
Mudstones, low-grade metamorphism
Schist
medium-grade, metamorphic, schistose foliation
Gneiss
high-grade metamorphic, alternating layers, different minerals
What happened to Auckland in the Miocene period?
Waitemata basin, waitakere and kaipara volcanoes erupt, Auckland lifted out of the sea, and volcanoes erupt (Leigh, Waiheke and Great Barrier)
