Geology and Oceanography Flashcards
Plate tectonics
Make up upper crust of Earth and float on upper mantle. Move 8-10 cm per yr.
Plate movements A) convergent B) divergent C) subduction D) strike slip
A) move together
B) move apart
C) move under. Causes volcanoes, trenches, mountains
D) move opposite directions
Where does spreading occur?
Mid ocean ridges, ocean floor
5 major oceans
Pacific Atlantic Arctic Indian Antarctic
Characteristics of oceanic plates
Created at mid ocean ridges and subduction zones
Younger than land plates
What is the continental shelf?
Up to 200 M, created by erosion, continental crust. Biologically rich.
What is the continental slope?
3,000-4,000 M, steep, boundary between continental and oceanic crust. Submarine canyons.
What is continental rise?
Sediment accumulation, turbidity currents, mud and sand
What is the Abyssal plain?
4,500-6,000 M. Oceanic crust below, mostly flat soft sediment. Manganese nodules and other resources undiscovered in plain.
What causes waves?
Primarily wind
Sometimes natural disasters
