Geology & Acidification Flashcards
Areas that are not susceptible to acid deposition:
Areas with high weathering rates, which produce large amounts of basic cations for neutralisation.
Catchments with high weathering rates (carbonates and basalts) can produce large amounts of basic cations year after year. These can
Exchange with acidic cations deposited from the atmosphere and therefore neutralise high rates of acid deposition.
Acidification is likely to occur in areas with
Low weathering rates (granites, shales, gneiss, quartz) and where soil formation is slow.
Areas with low weathering rates have
Low base cation concentrations, CEC and SAC.
Moderate amounts of acid deposition are hard to
Keep up with in areas with low weathering rates; These areas are at risk of freshwater acidification.
