Q

did all dinosaurs meet?

A

Not all dinosaurs we have come to recognize lived (and died out) at them same time!
Ex: Stegosaurus (which lived during the Jurassic) was extinct 80 million years before Tyrannosaurus (which lived during the Cretaceous). The two never met!

14
Q

what does the k and t stand for in the k-t mass extinction?

A

K = Kreide (German for chalk and refers to
CRETACIOUS PERIOD)
Word CRETACIOUS comes from CRETA, which is Latin for CHALK.
T = TERTIARY (the period after CRETACIOUS)
K-T EXTINCTION EVENT ushers in the end of
CRETACIOUS, beginning of TERTIARY PERIOD.

15
Q

what is the cretaceous period named after?

A

named after large quantities of CHALK (a form of LIMESTONE, made up of calcite, CaCO3) it left behind in Europe

16
Q

what’s the percentage the K-T EXTINCTION wiped out and why did it do that much damage?

A

approximately 80% of animals thought to be caused by asteroid impact (or impacts)

17
Q

what is the impact caused by the asteroid impact (or impacts)?

A

Such impacts ejected debris into the atmosphere, blocking sun and preventing photosynthesis.
This would be catastrophic to food chains.
May also have other factors such as changes in
climate, volcanoes, sea levels, etc…

18
Q

did all dinosaurs died out because of the K-T EXTINCTION?

A

no, birds are dinosaurs and therefore theoretically reptiles.
also some AVIAN DINOSAURS (the ancestors of today’s birds) survived the K-T EXTINCTION EVENT whereas all NON-AVIAN DINOSAURS died out.

19
Q

what do birds descended from?

A

from MANIRAPTORAN dinosaurs (from the MANIRAPTORA dinosaur group/clade).

20
Q

give an example of a MANIRAPTORAN dinosaur that lived during the CRETACEOUS PERIOD.

A

BAMBIRAPTOR

21
Q

what the group/clade of maniraptora palaeontologists believe birds were derived from approximately 150 million years ago during the JURASSIC PERIOD?

A

THEROPOD dinosaurs

22
Q

what are theropod dinosaurs?

A

dinosaurs with hollow bones and 3
toes/claws on each limb.

23
Q

what do maniraptorans feature like birds?

A

PROPATAGIUM

24
Q

so what are birds compared to dinosaurs?

A

Thus, birds are dinosaurs (or at the very least, their descendants).

25
what are other survivors of the k-t extinction excluding some birds?
➢ alligators, crocodiles (reptiles) ➢ lizards, turtles (reptiles) ➢ frogs, salamanders (amphibians) IMPORTANT for us: some mammals also survived the K-T EXTINCTION EVENT!!!
26
what are the mammals quite small that survived the k-t extinction?
One survivor was PURGATORIUS, one of the earliest known primates and therefore one of our earliest human ancestors!
27
what are primates?
they are mammals that: ➢ have hands and feet that grasp ➢ have relatively large and complex brain ➢ have vision that sees objects in 3 dimensions
28
give some examples of primates.
humans, apes, monkeys, lemurs, tarsiers.
29
what is the oldest known dinosaur, how old ago, where did he live and what did he resemble?
At 243 million years old, Nyasasarus Parringtoni is believed to be oldest known dinosaur! It lived in southern region of PANGEA during TRIASSIC PERIOD. It was size of a larger dog (e.g., Labrador)
