Geohazards Lecture 1 Flashcards
How to tectonic geohazards differ from other geohazards?
- infrequent
- high energy
- internally driven
What is a ‘natural hazard’
Describes the potential for dangerous natural phenomena related to a natural (catastrophic) event
What is RISK associated with a natural hazard?
A description and measure of the potential harmful consequences to the natural phenomena to: livelihoods, environment, life, economy, health, property
Formula for risk
RISK = hazard potential * loss potential
What is a probabilistic hazard?
Probability that an event of a given size will occur in given area within a specified time interval and incurs specific effects
What is a deterministic hazard?
Determining the consequences of a given scenario e.g. a mag 7 EQ occurring along this fault how large an area will be affected?
What formula relates probabilistic and deterministic hazard?
Rprob = ΣP(i)Rdet(i)
Rprob = probabilistic hazard estimate
Is a 2 year seismic hazard map of a region:
Long term, intermediate, short term, real time?
Probabilistic, deterministic
Long term
Probabilistic
What time scale hazard assessment type and what time of answer is :
Map of projected tsunami arrival times after EQ along tonga subduction zone?
Real time
Deterministic
what are the hazard assessment timescales?
long-term=years-decades
intermediate-term=months-years
short-term=hours-weeks
real-time=minutes-hours
