Q

what do you need to take into consideration when building tunnels? (8 points)

A
  • orientation
  • the water table
  • weathering
  • joint density
  • fracture and foliation density
  • gas build up
  • flooding
  • tunnel collapse

Q

what are swelling clays and what does it do to foundations?

A
  • clays within the soil can absorb water and expand which causes foundations to flex and crack
  • causes subsidence

Q

what are the steps in Brownfield Remediation?

A
  • site investigation -> find out what could be at the site
  • intrusive on-site investigation -> boreholes to see if you can mine anything or build upon it (due to bad geology)
  • remediation works -> phytoremediation, groundwater treatment and stabilization and solidification
  • verification and validation ->brownfield site now suitable to do works on
