Geohazards - Engineering Flashcards
1
Q
why is a raft foundation important?
A
spread weight over a wide area so good for soft sediment
2
Q
why are pylons important?
A
dig into stable rock which then stabilizes the building on soft sediment
3
Q
what do you need to take into consideration when building tunnels? (8 points)
A
- orientation
- the water table
- weathering
- joint density
- fracture and foliation density
- gas build up
- flooding
- tunnel collapse
4
Q
what are swelling clays and what does it do to foundations?
A
- clays within the soil can absorb water and expand which causes foundations to flex and crack
- causes subsidence
5
Q
what are the steps in Brownfield Remediation?
A
- site investigation -> find out what could be at the site
- intrusive on-site investigation -> boreholes to see if you can mine anything or build upon it (due to bad geology)
- remediation works -> phytoremediation, groundwater treatment and stabilization and solidification
- verification and validation ->brownfield site now suitable to do works on
