Geography Year 9 Spring Flashcards
Give some human uses of hot deserts.
Mineral resources, ecotourism, oil and gas and solar energy.
What does mineral resources mean?
Deserts are rich in minerals like copper gold and phosphate. Mining provides jobs but can pollute water and soil and disturb wildlife.
What does ecotourism mean?
Deserts attract tourists for adventure and cultural exploration with activities like camel trekking it promotes respect for the environment and wildlife.
What does oil and gas mean?
Deserts like Algeria’s Sahara have abundant fossil fuels contributing to 60% of income and providing jobs. However careless extraction can lead to pollution.
What does solar energy mean?
Deserts abundant sunshine makes them ideal for solar power. Plans for solar farms in Morocco and Tunisia aim to power 2 million homes although ecosystems may be disrupted.
Name some ways we can protect hot deserts.
Water and soil management, national parks, planting trees and magic stones.
What is water and soil management?
Low stone Walla are built to trap rainwater. The collected water is then used to irritate crops. This helps improve soil conditions.
What do national parks do to help deserts?
National parks that are built mean that people are not allowed to farm these areas allowing the land to naturally replenish.
How does planting trees help deserts?
Reduces soil erosion and bonds the soil together. The branches and leaves provide shade, fuelwood and food for animals.
How do magic stones help deserts?
Lines of stone walls are built on hillslopes. The stones trap rainwater and soil. This helps reduce desertification.
