What are continents
Large masses of land, usually surrounded by water
What are the 7
continents?
North America, South America, Africa, Asia,
Australia, Antarctica, and Europe.
Can you name all 8 of the
geographic regions of
North America?
Coastal Plain, Appalachian Highlands,
Canadian Shield, Interior Lowlands, Great
Plains, Rocky Mountains, Basin and
Range, Coastal Range.
Where is the Coastal
Plain?
Right next to the Atlantic Ocean and the
Gulf of Mexico.
What is the Coastal Plain
like?
Wide flat lowlands with harbors which are
good places for boats.
Where are the
Appalachian Highlands?
Right next to the Coastal Plain. They
stretch from Canada down to western
Alabama and include the Piedmont.
Remember that from the fourth grade?
What are the Appalachian
Highlands like?
Old, worn down and eroded mountains.
The oldest mountain range in North
America!
Where is the Canadian
Shield?
It goes around the Hudson Bay in a
horseshoe shape like a giant U.
What’s it like (Canadian Sheild)?
It has hills worn down by erosion and
hundreds of lakes carved by glaciers.
Where are the Interior
Lowlands?
Right in-between the Appalachian
Highlands and the Great Plains.
Tell me something about the
Lowlands.
The Interior Lowlands have rolling flatlands, many
rivers, wide river valleys and grassy hills.
Where are the Great Plains
located?
West of the Interior Lowlands and east of the
Rocky Mountains.
What are the Great
Plains like?
Very flat, but they slowly increase in
elevation as they go westward. They get
higher and higher. The plains are
grasslands.
Where are the Rocky
Mountains?
In-between the great plains and the Basin
and Range.
What are the Rocky
Mountains like?
They are beautiful and stretch from Alaska
almost all the way down to Mexico. They
are very high which means they have very
high elevations!
