French and Spanish explorers traveled on
the Gulf to reach Mexico and other parts of

It was a “gateway” to the western part of
the U.S. Many people traveled on the Ohio

A

Port cities grew in the Midwest along the
edge of the Great Lakes. They are the
biggest lakes in the U.S.
