GEOGRAPHY- WATER Flashcards
natural resources
raw materials that occur in the enviroment and are necessary to humans
what is a renewable resource
a resource which can be replaced over a short period of a time
non renewable resources
a resource that can only be replaced over many centuries
two examples of renewable resources
water and solar energy
two examples of non renewable resources
coal and oil
is water a renewable resource
water is a renewable resource as it is constantly being recycled
where does water stay the longest
Antartic ice sheets
where is groundwater stored
A: under the earths surface
what does permeable mean
a: something that allows liquids or gases to pass through
what is groundwater recharge
a: groundwater recharge is when surface water filters into aquifers
what is blue water
the water in freshwater lakes, rivers, wetlands and aquifers
what is green water
water that is stored in the soil or that stays on top of the soil or in vegetation
run off
precipitation not absorbed by soil, and which runs over the land and into streams
how is most of earth’s water used
Agriculture 70%
what does australia use most its water for
Agriculture
what does the water cycle show
the water cycle shows water is recycled, it tells us that millions of years ago when dinosaurs lived they would drink and urinate. this means water woulsd evaporate and become rain. We know from this that the water cycle was present long ago.
water scarcity
a situation that occurs when the demand for water is greater than the supply available
water stress
a situation that occurs in a country with less than 1000 cubic metres of renewable fresh water per person
improved drinking water
water that is safe for human consumption
outline the differences between non-renewable and renewable resources
non renewable resources are restored over a long period of time and a renewabe resource ism restored over a short period
whatb does the water cycle show
the water cycle shows water is recycled, it tells us that millions of years ago when dinosaurs lived they would drink and urinate. this means water woulsd evaporate and become rain. We know from this that the water cycle was present long ago.
outline how groundwater and surface water are interconnected
When water falls as rain, some of it will seep through the surface to refill aquifers, this shows how ground water and surface water are interconnected.
what will happen to the enviroment and people in countries that will recieve more rain in 68 years
In countries that recieve more rainfall in the coming years there will be many floods and food shortages
what will happen to the enviroment and people in countries that will recieve less rain in 68 years
In countries that are predicted to recieve less rainfall in future decades they will most likely be droughts and less run-off would be recieved
