geography urban Flashcards
Outline and explain four factors which encourage the growth of megacities.
multiplier effect-Economic growth encourages populations in cities to grow. More jobs are available due to increased demand, and more services are needed for an increasing population.
2) Population Growth
Through rural-urban migration and natural increase.
3)Economies of Scale
Where larger cities have financial savings on transport and communications for both people and businesses rather than smaller cities. This is because the distances within one megacity are less than the distances between many smaller cities.
(4) Economic Development
Increase in secondary and tertiary industries leads to economic growth leading to urbanisation.
Explain TWO ways by which cities can grow in size. (4 marks)
Multiplier effect [1]. Economic growth encourages populations growth [1]. More labour is available and more services needed for an increasing population [1].
Population growth [1]. Through rural-urban migration [1]. Through natural increase – when birth rates are higher than death rates so population rises [1].
What does the term GLOBAL CITY mean?
A global city is an urban centre that enjoys competitive advantages and serves as a hub within a globalised economic system.
name three social impacts or rapid urbanisation
1)increasing growth of the informal sector-due to higher rates of population growth in comparison to economic growing in cities such as lagos or rio,saw people forced to work in the informal sector.
2)the growth of informal housing
3)lack of education because in areas where people dont have enough money their isnt enough teachers too support them
What do the terms Megacity and Millionaire city mean?
Megacity is a term used to describe an urban area with an exceptionally large population, typically in the millions.
: A Millionaire city refers to a city where a significant number of residents are millionaires, meaning they have a net worth exceeding one million units
What does the term GLOBAL CITY mean?
A global city is an urban centre that enjoys competitive advantages and serves as a hub within a globalised economic system.
what factors influence the vulnerability of countries to natural hazard?
high population and density.this increases the risk of number of potential victims.coasta land areas are geographically more at risk when it comes to natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis and thyphoons.
(proximity to plate boundaries such as ring of fire)
what factors influence the vulnerabilty of countries to natural hazards?(no2)
econmics and politics
lidcs are more at risk as they are not able to afford protective measures such as earthquake proof buildings in japan.in poorer countries buiding regulation is less promentinet and enforced.
Explain one problem with non-renewable energy sources
One problem is that they contribute to global warming.
he burning of fossil fuels such as oil releases green houses gases like CO2, these increase how much heat is trapped in our atmosphere causing faster global warming.
