Geography-unit 2 Flashcards
Carrying capacity
the number of people that an area can hold while providing enough resources
Doubling time
Number of years needed to double a population
Crude death rate
Number of deaths in a year for every 1000 people alive in the region
Crude birth rate
Number of live births in a year for every 1000 people alive in the region
Natural increase rate
Percentage by which a population grows in a year (excluding migration)
Infant mortality
Annual number of deaths of infants under 1 year of age
Life expectancy
The average number of years a gender is expected to live
Population pyramid
Bar graph that displays the percentage of a places population for each age and gender
Demographic transition model
shows changes in birth rates and death rates in countries over time
Overpopulation
an undesirable condition where the number of people on earth is greater than its carrying capacity
Population density
population Density (3 kinds- Arithmetic density, physiological density, agricultural density)
migration,
movement between two places
immigration,
movement into a country
emigration,
movement out of one country
internal migration,
Move across countries
interregional migration,
moving between countries
intraregional migration
movement within a region
forced migration,
made to leave by government/authority
voluntary migration,
a person who chooses to leave their home country
refugee
person who must leave in order to live
chain migration
chain migration
remittance
Money sent back to one’s home country
stage 1
high birth rate and high death rate and stable growth
stage 2
high growth increase. High birth rate. Rapidly falling death rate
stage 3
falling birth and death rate. Increase slows down but still going up
stage 4
low or zero growth. Low death rate, low birth rate
Developed countries are most likely to be in this stage
arithmetic density
total objects in an area- 200 people/ square mile
physiological density
number of people supported by unit of arable (farmable) land
agricultural density
number of farmers to the arable land
what is arable land
farmable land
