Tourism definition?
The commercial organisation and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest.
Mass tourism definintion?
Form of tourism that involves tens of thousands of people going to the resort often at the same time of year.
Dark tourism definition?
Tourism that is associated with death of tragedy.
Ecotourism definition?
Tourism which encourages visitors so they can contribute to the local economy (multiplier effect) while at the same time uses ways that protect the local environment e.g. local materials, nature reserves, local food, locals employed in hotels + businesses.
Extreme tourism definition?
Tourism involving locations with difficult environments - often with difficult climates and remote places that are sparsely settled or not occupied at all.
Why is dark tourism important?
To memorialise tragic historic events and raises awareness.
How to behave at a dark tourism site?
No selfies
Prioritise those who have a personal connection
Be quiet
Don’t laugh or make jokes
Positive social aspects of tourism?
Helps people understand and respect different cultures, races etc
Negative social aspect of tourism?
Risk of disease transmission, increased crime
Positive environmental aspect of tourism?
Greater appreciation of nature and conservation, leads to increased funding for NP etc
Negative environmental aspects of tourism?
Soil erosion, increased pollution, natural habitat loss, more pressure on endangered species
Positive economic aspect of tourism?
Increase in jobs, higher quality of life for locals, increase of wealth in the area
Negative economic aspect of tourism?
Increase of taxes bc need to fund tourist attractions, decrease of traditional jobs

Protected areas, raise awareness, limited number of people
