How to calculate population density
(people/km2)
stage 1
high birth rates and high death rates
- little to no industrial development
- lack of education
- no access to birth control
- limited access to healthcare
- Very low GDP.
stage 2
- birth rates high,
- access to food and healthcare increases
- dramatically lower death rates.
- This creates a time when the population increases in a country.
stage 3
- begins when a country industrializes
- moves away from agriculture to a more technological society.
- more women become educated and pursue careers, they have less children and - birth rates fall.
- Population growth begins to stabilize
stage 4
low birth rates and death rates.
Society is focused on economic opportunities
women have fewer children, later in life.
By the end of stage 4, population will begin to decrease as birth rates fall lower than the death rate.
The average population ages, and the elderly become the largest demographic group
stage 5
Stage 5 is included in many DTMs
post industrial time where populations consistently decrease
due to few births and a stable low death rate.
High GDP
