Geography Test Revison Term 1 Year 9 Flashcards
to memorise
What is food security?
Food security exists when all people, always, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy lifestyle.
What is food insecurity?
Food insecurity is when people frequently do not have access to enough food to lead healthy lives.
How is food security distributed?
Food security is not evenly distributed; regions with higher population densities or rapidly growing populations tend to have lower food security.
Which countries tend to have higher food security?
More economically developed nations such as the USA and Australia tend to have higher overall food security.
What issues can arise in developed nations regarding food security?
Developed nations may have higher levels of obesity and food wastage, and marginalized communities within these nations can still suffer from malnutrition.
Why do humans alter biomes, even though we understand their importance to ecosystems and communities?
This is due to many causes. One of the main reasons are clearing up space for people to live in. Locations are deforested and then made into mega cities and other amenities for people. As deforestation happens more and more trees are cut down, and this causes for flash floods because tree roots mainly hold the large amounts of water preventing these floods.
What does the term climate change usually describe?
The global average temperature fluctuation over time due to a range of natural processes.
How long has climate change been occurring?
For hundreds of thousands of years.
What phenomenon is responsible for the cycle of cold glacial periods known as?
Ice ages.
What is global warming primarily caused by?
Human-induced processes related to industrialization.
What has industrialization dramatically increased in the atmosphere?
The amount of carbon dioxide.
How has recent industrialization affected global warming?
It has led to unnatural, exponential warming of the globe.
What is the predicted increase in average global temperature in the next century?
2-6 degrees Celsius.
How much faster is the predicted temperature increase compared to historical records?
20 times faster.
Why do we use carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere to measure?
This is due to carbon dioxide levels being the easiest ones to read and understand.
What can be measured to track carbon emissions from factories?
We can find out carbon emissions by getting results from people doing carbon audits.
What geographical area is predicted to have larger yields from harvests?
Areas above the equator have a larger yield rates compared to area beneath the equator.
What may cause more locations to become farmable in the northern hemisphere?
Large amounts of freshwater glaciers melting.
True or False: Global warming is primarily a natural process.
False.
What are biomes normally named after?
The prime vegetation in the region and their main types of climates
What cultural factor affects people’s mobility in certain locations?
A large amount of cultural background preventing some types of people from leaving
What happens to the amount of sun rays reaching the Earth as you move away from the equator?
The less sun rays reach the Earth
How does precipitation affect rainforests and tropical biomes?
High amounts of precipitation help to make larger rainforests and tropical biomes
What trend occurs in biomes as you move from the equator?
Biomes become wetter and colder
