Geography Test Flashcards
Definition of Area referencing
An AR uses 4 digits to show the general area of a feature. ( The grid square in which it is located.)
Definition of Grid referencing
A GR uses 6 digits to show the specific location of a feature within a grid square.
Definition of Latitude Lines
These are imaginary lines drawn around the Earth horizontally. Remember the rhyme ‘Lat’s Flat’. This reminds us that latitude lines are the flat ones.
Definition of Longitude Lines
These are imaginary lines drawn on the Earth vertically. You can remember this by thinking that longitude lines are drawn ‘long-ways’ up and down the surface of the Earth.
Definition of BOLTS
BOLTS stands for Border, Orientation, Legend (Key) , Titles, Scale.
What are the types of maps?
The types of maps are: Topographic Maps, Physical Maps, Political Maps, Thematic Maps
What is a Physical map
A physical map shows physical (or natural) features of an environment
What is a topographic map?
Topographic maps show the land’s shape by using contour lines.
What is a Political map?
A political map shows things like the borders between states or countries, as well as including things like the names and locations of towns and cities
What is a thematic map?
Thematic maps use symbols to show where things are located.
Definition of Direction
Direction or ‘‘Orientation’ allows us to calculate the direction from one place to another on a map. To do this, we use a compass
Definition of a Climate Graph
Climate graphs show the
typical monthly rainfall and
temperatures for a location.
Definition of Synoptic Charts
Sometimes simply called ‘weather maps’, synoptic charts show features of the atmosphere related to weather.
Definition of Landscapes
A landscape is an area, created by a combination of geological, geomorphological, biological and cultural layers that have evolved over time
Definition of Landforms
Landforms are The individual surface features of the Earth identified by their shape
What are the Different Geomorphic processes ?
They are: Weathering, Erosion,
Deposition, and Tectonic Activity
Definition of Geomorphic Processes
Geomorphic processes are natural processes that transform the lithosphere (Earth’s crust) to create distinctive landscapes and landforms.
Definition for weathering
Weathering is the process where rock is dissolved, worn away or broken down into smaller and smaller pieces. There are mechanical, chemical and organic weathering processes.
Definition for Erosion
Erosion occurs when rock and sediments are picked up and moved to another place. There are many different agents of erosion - ice, water, wind or gravity. It causes some very unique landform features.
Definition for tectonic Activity
Tectonic activity is the movement in the Earth’s crust. This movement is responsible for the creation of some of the worlds largest landforms.
Definition for deposition
Deposition is the laying down of eroded material that has been carried by wind, water or ice. It can be transported as pebbles, sand or mud.
What are the values of landscapes ?
They are: Spiritual, Aesthetic, Economical, and Cultural
Definition of spiritual values
Spiritual value means that Some people might feel connected to their ancestors or god/s at that place.
Definition of Aesthetic Value
Aesthetic value means that Some people get enjoyment from how the landscape/landform looks.
