Key facts
•there are 4000 manufacturing companies in Ireland
•over 200,000 people are being employed directly
•a further 400,000 are being employed indirectly
•experts from this sector are worth 117 billion
Raw materials
Can be big and heavy and may need to be located close for ease
Market
This is where the factory sell their products if market is close transport is quick and cheap
Transport facilities
All factories must transport their products to the market and must be sold in the same country they are made
Labour force
People who work in the factory, it needs to be where there is enough workers, cities, and towns
Services
Need to access services like water, electricity, sewage, treatment, broadband and Wi-Fi
Government policy
They do things to encourage companies to set up in Ireland, and also gives grants to help companies set up here
Personal preference
Some may set up in an area where they come from or an area they like
Heavy industry
Both the raw materials and the products being made in a heavy industry are bigand heavy example, iron and steel making
Light industry
Products being made in a light industry are small and light, example, phone or laptop
Foot loose industry
And industry not tied up to one place usually light industries are located in industrial estate
What is an industrial estate
•Sites on the edge of urban areas, set aside for industry
•land is cheaper here, so there is space to build on and expand
