Geography test 1 Flashcards

1
Q

What did Thomas Malthus propose?

A

Malthus proposed that England’s population growth would outstrip agriculture production (our population would exceed the amount of resources we have)

Q

Why is thomas malthus wrong

A

Renewable Energy:

  • Wind power:
    Lowest environmental impacts
Space not a problem as offshore windpower (turbines in the ocean)
80 different countries are already using wind power conventionally
- Hydropower:
Water power most widely used
Doesn’t pollute water or air
Convert as much as 90% energy into electricity
Never run out of water

Building upwards instead of outwards:

Malthus proposed we would run out of land
Yet already building up instead of out
EG: old multi-story carpark used for farming, set amount of water and sunlight to limit waste
Apartment blocks and high buildings for living

Q

What is an ecological footprint

A

The ecological footprint is one means of measuring human demand for ecological services. The footprint takes into account the regenerative capacities of biomes and ecosystems, which are described as the Earth’s biocapacity.

Q

Define sustainability

A

Sustainability meets the needs of the present generation yet not comprise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Ensure that people have the opportunity to develop themselves in a free, well-balanced society which is in harmony with nature.

Combine the social, economic and environmental needs for people now and in the future.

8
Q

explain the natural greenhouse affect and the enhanced greenhouse affect

A

The natural greenhouse effect is the earth releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, regulating earth’s temperatures
When humans alter this process it is the enhanced greenhouse effect
The enhanced greenhouse effect is the observable rising temperatures over the past century, due to humans contributing more methane and carbon to the atmosphere

13
Q

What are natural causes of climate change

A

volcanic eruptions as they send ash and dust up into the sky which ends up blocking the rays of sunlight coming from the sun.

Q

Impacts of Global Warming such as glaciers and snow caps melting

A

Global warming leads to the calving of ice ( glaciers breaking off into the ocean)

Glaciers recede extremely in a matter of months

Melting glaciers and snow caps lead to accelerated speed for rising sea levels

Reduces the glaciers mass by shrinking it

Q

Evidence of global warming - ice cores

A

“An ice core is a core sample that is typically removed from an ice sheet or a high mountain glacier.

Ice cores show evidence of climate change as on ice sheets we get layers of snow and ice and they’ve compressed over millions of years. By melting ice cores they can record amounts of carbon and methane in the atmosphere at a time. (ancient air).

Q

Local solution to Global Warming

A

Cattle contribute 37% of methane emissions (eat less meat)
Worldwide flights produced 915 million tonnes of CO2 in 2019 (less flights)
The average car in Australia produces 16 tonnes of carbon a year (less use of cars)

17
Q

global solution to Global Warming

A

The eden project (current)
Eden Reforestation Projects” was launched 2004 ethiopia, in order to attempt to reverse environmental devastation that negatively impacted families and local culture whilst trying to have a positive impact on the environment.
The UN paris project (future)
Reaffirm the goal of limiting global temperature increase well below 2 degrees Celsius
Establish binding commitments by all parties to make “nationally determined contributions”
Reaffirm the binding obligations of developed countries to support the efforts of developing countries,
