Why is the Amazon important?
- Provides 1/5 of the world’s freshwater
- Provides 1/5 of the oxygen we breathe

- Cultivated land loses 90 million tonnes of soil per hectare (due to surface runoff)
- £123 billion have been made from cattle ranching in the Amazon as a result of deforestation
- 5% of Brazil’s GDP comes from soya bean farming
- Brazil is now the world’s largest exporter of beef
Why the Thar Desert is important:
- 9th largest subtropical desert
- Largest population density of a desert 83 per km²
Opportunities in the Thar Desert:
- Tourism (festivals in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur attract 500 000 a year)
- Mineral Extraction (3 million tonnes of selenite and gypsum produced a year)
- Farming (Indira Ghandi Canal made in 1958 revolutionised irrigation for farming)
- Energy (any 75 wind turbines have the capacity to produce 60 megawatts of electricity)
Why is tourism important in Kenya?
Tourism brings in US$5.3billion to Kenya’s economy
11% of the total wage employment is accounted for by tourism and earnings from tourism allow the government to reduce their level of debt
Travel & Tourism generated 226,500 jobs directly in
2013, indirectly 11.6% of Kenyan’s jobs rely on tourism
Money spent by tourists in 2014 within Kenya was
17% of Kenya’s exports.
7.6% of Kenya’s capital investment comes from tourism

- Employees often work long hours (12+) in poor conditions in factories known as ‘sweat shops’

Life expectancy is higher in Cambridge at 79.5 years than in Liverpool at 75.7 years - evidence of the North-South divide
