Geography Revision Flashcards
Tropical rainforests, TDF, Cold and Hot deserts
Where are cold deserts located ?
In a band North of the Arctic Circle and South of the Antarctic Circle
Why are Cold deserts cold ?
Because they get less concentrated rays of sun and they have a larger atmosphere to travel through.
Give an example of 1 fauna and 1 flora in cold deserts
Fauna: Siberian Tiger
Flora: Arctic poppy / cusion plant
What are the adaptions of these ?
cold deserts
Fauna:
Siberian tiger - paler stripes, thick fur, blubber, good vision.
Flora:
Cusion plant - Grows close to the ground, traps dust
Arctic poppy - Hairy stems, moves with the sun.
What is a threat to Cold Deserts ?
Permafrost
What is permafrost ?
A layer of soil under the ground that is permanently frozen
Which country is experiencing Permafrost ?
Siberia
Why is the permafrost melting ?
Usually due to rising temperatures
What is a positive effect of the permafrost melting ?
Unearthing new fossils / potentialy bring back millions of animals.
What is a negative effect of the permafrost melting ?
( example of a greenhouse gas )
Plants are releasing more and more Greenhouse Gasses into the air ( such as carbon dioxide )
How can we manage the permafrost melting ?
Rewilding - the process of restoring an ecosystem
Painting roads white - the roads that run through areas of permafrost can make it warmer so painting them white could cool them down.

Where are hot deserts located ?
Mostly along the tropics of Cancer & Capricorn
Give an example of 1 fauna and 1 flora in hot deserts
Fauna: Camel
Flora: Cactus
What are the adaptions of these ?
hot deserts
Fauna:
Camel - large padded feet, long eyelashes, humps, light colour
Flora:
Cactus - stems that store water, large root systems, spines
