Geography Review Flashcards
The natural features that make up Earth’s surface
Landforms
Extremely hot fluid or semi-fluid material under Earth’s crust
Magma
Release of energy through Earth’s crust due to changes taking place beneath it
Earthquake
Soft weak layer under the lithosphere upon which the tectonic plates move
Asthenosphere
The wearing away of Earth’s surface by wind, water or glacial action
Erosion
An opening in Earth’s crust from which molten rock or magma escapes to reach the surface
Volcano
The theory that Earth’s surface is made up of rigid plates that are pushed by forces inside the planet
Plate tectonics
The point on Earth’s surface directly above the location of an Earthquake
Epicentre
A circular motion created when warmer rises and draws down colder material, which replaces it
Convection flow
A tool that measures the magnitude and duration disturbance of the ground, especially earthquakes
Seismograph
Plains
A flat land that is in low elevations. They are found in every continent. Some were form at the bottom of what was once sea.
Valley
An area of low land between areas of higher land. They often have a river flowing through them.
Mountain
Formed by huge movements of the earth’s crust. There are different types including volcanos and fold mountains. It is rocky.
Plateau
Area of flat land that is in high elevation. They are sometimes between mountains
Shield
Area of old rocks formed by ancient mountains that have been worn down
