Three Types of Scale:
Direct Statement: Describes the scale in words.
Linear Scale: A graphical representation of scale.
Representation Fraction: A ratio of map distance to ground distance.
Examples:
Line scale for 1 cm to 7 km: This would be represented as a line marked with segments corresponding to distances.
Direct statement for 1 cm to 400 km: “1 cm on the map represents 400 km on the ground.”
Representation fraction for 1 cm to 115 km: 1:11,500,000 (since 1 cm on the map = 115 km on the ground).
Differences between Large-scale and Small-scale Maps:
Large-Scale Maps: Show a small area in great detail (e.g., 1:50,000 or 1:25,000).
Small-Scale Maps: Show a large area with less detail (e.g., 1:250,000 or 1:500,000).
