Geography population Flashcards
Top ten countries by population
China, India, USA, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil, Bangladesh, Russia, Mexico
Three determinants of population growth
births, deaths, migration
Birth rate
The number of live births per 1000 population
Death rate
the ratio of deaths to the population of a particular area or during a particular period of time, usually calculated as the number of deaths per one thousand people per year
Net migration
the net total of migrants during a period, that is, the number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants
Emigrant
a person who leaves their own country in order to settle permanently in another.
Immigrant
a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country
Rate of natural increase
subtracting the crude death rate (CDR) from the crude birth rate (CBR) and then dividing by 10
This value represents the estimated rate of population growth
Total fertility rate
the average number of children that would be born to a female over their lifetime per country
Replacement fertility rate
Replacement level fertility” is the total fertility rate—the average number of children born per woman—at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next, without migration.
Life expectancy
the average period that a person may expect to live.
Dependency ratio
100 x (Population (0-14) + Population (65+)) / Population (15-64)
Measure of how many people depend on the working class
“Goldilocks Moment”
When there aren’t many people that depend on the working class (there are more working class than others)
Expansive population pyramid
High birth rate, high death rate, short life expectancy, fall in dependency ratio so more middle aged people
Stationary population pyramid
Declining birth rate, low death rate, long life expectancy, increasing population of 65+ age group
