Define: Fecundity
The physiological capability of a woman (or man, or couple) to produce a live birth
Define: Fertility
The number of live births actually achieved by a woman (or man, couple or population)
Define: Live birth
The product of pregnancy shows breathing or evidence of life
What is the cohort fertility rate?
Measures the number of children born to a cohort of women (women born or married within a specific time period) over their lifetime
What is the period fertility rate?
Measures the number of children born within a specific time period (usually expressed as per 1000 women alive in the middle of the period)
Define: Completed Fertility
The average number of children born by a cohort of women by the end of their reproductive years
Define: Parity Progression Ratio
The proportion of women with at least n children who go on to have at least one more child
What are the cohort fertility measures?

Define: Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
The ratio of live births in (say) a calendar year, decade etc. to the average population in that period
(Births/Population) x 1000
General Fertility Rate (GFR)
(Births/Women aged 15-49) * 1000
Age Specific Fertility Rate
(Births to women aged x/Women in age group x) * 1000
Total Fertility Rate
Number of children who would be born per woman iif she lived to the end of her childbearing years and bore children at each age in accordance with prevailing age-specific fertility rates
