Q

Pipeline management. Okay yeh calm but like give some examples tho me brudda.

A
  • Refrigerated supports (used on da Trans-Alaska pipeline).
  • Insulated ice and gravel pads; i.e. putting roads and other infrastructure on these pads to prevent melting.
  • Elevated pipelines.
  • More powerful computers can detect oil and gas; less need for exploratory drilling.
  • Heavily insulated pipes at water depths of 6.5-65 feet.

All of the above have the primary purpose of preventing permafrost from thawing.

Q

Management strategies gimme 3!

A
  • don’t drill (rah I know it’s simple but you can acc put this in the exam it’s mad)
  • don’t drill but instead remove the insulating vegetation and let permafrost melt itself (long process obvs = drawback), and afterwards can pop some coarse material in as a more stable replacement
  • preserve perma; pragmatic choice - thawing perma = significant costs due to infrastructure damage
