Mumbai has grown through natural increase (growth of population through birth and death rates) and urban migration (people moving to Mumbai from other areas)
How has Mumbai grown?
It grows at a rate of 750 per day and has grown by over 30 million people since 1901- its current population is 21,673,100
What types of jobs do migrants get?
Most migrants move to Mumbai for a new opportunities there but end up getting informal jobs- no formal working agreement with employers and employees. People in Mumbai also develop their own businesses
What are the challenges for people living in Mumbai?
Often people in Mumbai face the problems of housing- they cant afford a new house so settle in the Dharavi slums where there is a shortage of water and lots of sickness
Opportunities for people living in Mumbai
There are many employment opportunities, better education opportunities and social opportunities- there are lots of community events
How are the challenges being solved?
There are many schemes in place to help the population of Mumbai have access to things like clean water, toilet facilities and housing

Top-down involves small-scale, inexpensive projects while bottom-up involves large-scale, expensive projects
What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
