Geography Key Words Flashcards
Causality
The relationship between cause + effect.
A causal agent creates change in a dependent variable.
EG - Torrential Rain = Flooding.
Systems
Systems are groups of related objects, physical or human found on all scales. An ecosystem is an example.Relationships between systems components bind it so change in 1 component has far reaching inputs on a system.
Equilibrium
The state of stability in a system achieved when a balance exists between inputs + outputs.
In glaciers accumulation(inputs) ,use equal ablation(outputs) for equilibrium.
Inequality
The unequal distribution of resources, opportunities, well being etc within a society.Inequalities can raise moral questions like contrasts in wealth/education.
Spatial Inequality
Are concerning and raise issues of social justice and poses questions causes and SEPES impacts
Feedback
An automatic internal response to change in systems.
Negative Feedback - restores system to balance
Positive Feedback - amplifies change = further disequilibrium
Global Warming for example causes both negative and positive feedback
Representation
The ways by which meanings are given to the world. Influenced by our perceptions, moulded by factors such as age, gender or education. Influenced by our culture. Includes anything human’s have influence on.
Identity
how something is recognised, the concept of identity is closely linked with place. The identity of individuals/groups shaped by place, in turn shaped by identity.Often identity has an emotional connection with certain places.
National identity can draw people together + turn people against outsiders
Globalisation
The multiple interconnections + linkages between peoples nations, businesses + individuals making up the modern world system.Winners + losers of globalisation processes not same everywhere.
Interdependence
At global scale the mutual dependence of 2+ countries with reciprocal relationships.Economic + Socioeconomic interdependence .Increasingly countries are becoming interdependent in their effects on global environment + political relationships.Growing features of globalisation and development processes
Mitigation
Action which is taken to lesson the impact of natural hazards on people, economy + society however does not prevent them. Mitigation responses can vary.
Adaption
Responses to environmental change which aim to modify human behaviour + economic systems permanently.
Sustainability
The use of resources that is environmentally and economically viable I. the long term.It ensures the productivity + health of environmental + economic systems. Achieves a balance between supply + demand without adverse impacts on physical + environmental system.
Time Space compression
Changed economic, social, political and cultural processes.Key element of this is integration of human activities across the globe .Events, actions and decisions effect each other more and more.
Scale
Spatial scale for approaching space + place. Ranging from individual + community scales to global
