Q

How was glaciation involved in shaping UK’s upland landscape?

A
  • Last ice age was 10,000 years ago, which could have eroded the land.
  • Glaciers melted and huge amounts of water eroded landscapes.
  • Main process was glacial erosion.

Q

What happened to skeletons as they fell?

A

As they fell they crush those beneath squeezing water out and compacting them into rock.

Q

What resists erosion well?

A

Carbon grit resists erosion so well that it forms the highest peak of the Pennines.

Q

What are the characteristics of igneous rock?

A

The characteristics of igneous rocks are that they are the earth’s oldest rock which are formed by lava and magma. When magma or lava cool, the rock is formed. They are crystallised and more resistant to erosion.

Q

What are the characteristics of sedimentary rock?

A

They are formed by small eroded particles. They are transported and they are deposited in layers. They can come from plants and animals. Some sedimentary rocks are resistant, while other are easily able to be crumbled.

Q

What are the characteristics of metamorphic rocks?

A

Metamorphic rocks are sedimentary rocks that were compressed and heated during igneous activity. They are made up of layers and tend to be more resistant.

Q

What are the characteristics of chalk?

A

Chalk was formed by being a purer form of limestone. It has a medium resistance but is stronger than clays and sands.

16
Q

What are the characteristics of limestone?

A

Limestone was formed 250-350 million years ago. It is build up of layers, from calcium carbonate.

17
Q

What are the characteristics of clay?

A

Clay was formed by mud deposited by rivers or sea. It is soft and crumbly. It becomes shale when compacted.

18
Q

What are the characteristics of granite?

A

Granite is formed from magma cooling underground. It contains quartz crystals and it is also very resistant.

19
Q

What are the characteristics of schist?

A

It is formed by metamorphosis of slate. It is very resistant as well.

20
Q

What are the characteristics of slate?

A

It is from shale and heated muds and it very resistant.

21
Q

What is the formation of a Weald?

A

The formation of a Weald is it is made of sedimentary rock laid down. The rocks are chalk, greensand and clay. Tectonic processes, like anticline occur.
Different rates of erosion occur, starting from chalk which creates a steep scarp for chalk. A dip is then made.
