Geography assessment Flashcards
Biome
A large naturally occurring community of flora (plant) and fauna (animals) occupying a major habitat
Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment
Extreme environment
An extreme environment is a habitat that is considered very hard to survive in due to its significantly extreme conditions such as temperature and lack of rainfall
Flora
A plant of a certain habitat
Fauna
A animal of a certain habitat
P
Pattern- What is the overall pattern? Is it even/uneven.
E
Example- What examples support the overall pattern. Use names of places given on the map. Look at countries and continents
A
Anomaly- Are there any examples on the map that don’t fit the pattern.
Whats on the left side of the graph?
Precipitation, bar graphs
Whats on the right side of the graph?
Temperature, line graph
How do you describe climate graphs in a paragraph?
State if the climate is consistent all year or if it varies
Describe the rainfall across the year (refer to highest months and lowest months, refer to the average)
Describe the temperature across the year (refer to highest months and lowest months, refer to the averages)
What are threats that face hot deserts?
Droughts - Plants and animals die, already a minimal amount of water, increases the risk of wildfires and has a lower chance of putting them out
Wildfires - Adds greenhouse gasses to the earth, kills plants and makes it hard for them to re-grow, increases the amount of wind
What are threats that face cold deserts?
Global warming - Melt ice caps/animals homes, raises sea levels, causes animals to die
Tourism - Pollution by leaving trash, habitat degradation, disrupts wildlife, and off-road vehicles can cause soil erosion
What is the difference between hot and cold deserts?
Their average temperature, their location, and hot deserts are closer to the equator, and cold deserts are in higher latitudes
Droughts and wildfires
Droughts and wildfires severely threaten hot deserts by depleting already scarce water resources and destroying fragile ecosystems. With limited rainfall, plants and animals struggle to survive, while fires quickly spread through dry vegetation. This combination intensifies desert degradation and makes recovery even harder.
