Geography and Child Labour Flashcards
What is Geography
Geography is the study of the world, how it works, and how people, use and change as they live in it.
What are the 5 themes of geography?
1) Place
2) Location
3) Human and Environmental Interaction
4) Human Movement
5) Region
To what extent does child labour exist today?
A child can work up to 14 hours a day, 7 days a week with little or no amount of rest, food and water. 218 million children aged 5 - 17 are involved in child labor worldwide.
Examples of groups that fight against child labour.
1) ILO(International Labour Organization) organises a special day every year where they encourage startup organisations to “join with us and add your voice to the worldwide movement against child labour.”.
2) NCLC(National Child Labour Committee) “the mission of promoting the rights, dignity, well-being and education of children and youth as they relate to work and working.”
What might you be able to do to contribute to the global efforts to eliminate child labour?
Think locally first. It’s best to start small. Go to a local organisation and start volunteering. If you don’t have the time, then donate. If you want to help at a global scale, I personally think that you SHOULDN’T donate to big organisations such as the UN, because you never know where your money goes. You should VOLUNTEER. Then you know that your time has gone to a good cause.
What situations help to continue child labour?
1) In many cultures, child labour is looked at as normal. There is nothing wrong with it. These people don’t understand the burden their children go through.
2) Debt bondage. When a poor family has borrowed money they can’t repay, they send their child to work.
3) When there is a war raging and many of the soldiers are wounded, the government recruits children to serve, because their lives aren’t nearly as valuable as an adults.
