Piedmont experiences a continental climate. The Alps create a rainshadow effect & autumn hail can be a worry in the Langhe Hills.
What is Sori mean in Piedmontese dialect?
Piedmontese dialect for the part of the hillside where the snow melts first, meaning full southern exposure therefore the best place to grow Nebbiolo. The famous producer Angelo Gaja makes an extraordinary Barbaresco from a vineyard called Sori Tilden.

The Native Nebbiolo. The thin skinned Nebbiolo named for the morning fog (La Nebbia) in the fall produces high acid, alcohol and extreme tannic wines which offer haunting aromoatic complexity and longevity.

Dolchetto or “The little one” is the earliest to ripen and provides tannic, fruitty wines which are lower in acid and generally designed for youthful consumption.
