The meander gets bigger because if erosion of the river bed

The neck of the meander becomes very narrow and is separated by a small piece of land.

The river breaks through the small piece of land.

The river starts off once again in a straight channel leaving the bend isolated from the rest of the river this is known as an ox now lake!
