Geography Flashcards
Where is Omaha
80km north of Auckland.
East coast of Rodney District
Between cAPE rODNEY AND tAKATU pOINT
What type of sand is at Omaha
medium sand (0.5-2mm diameter) on the ocean side and fine sand and silt ( less than 0.5mm) on the harbour side
Where is the sand from
Volcanic rocks around Rotorua and Taupo, brought to here by Taupo
What’s the direction of the longshore drift
From Te Kie point to the end of the spit, northward
Whats a main feature in backshore zone
sand dune system having both native and exotic grasses
Direction of ebb( when tide falls) tide and flood( tide rises)
Ebb goes south, flood goes north
Direction of prevailing wind
West to South West
When was the spit farmed
1930
When was sand dredged from offshore zone and the amount
1942 to 1963, around 380,000m3
When was the subdivison of house built and extended north and how many houses
1970, extended in mid 90s, around 1000 houses
How many tourists visit per year
1 million
5 reasons why sand is limited here
- Little is introduced by river
- Sand eroded during storms is deposited in an offshore bar and gradully return to beach
- Sand is moved to harbour entrance by flood tide and brought out of harbour into surf zone by ebb tide
- Little comes from river that drains the land
- Stretch of coast is sheltered so lost sand will not be replaced
Effects of sand dredged
Hole created causing ebb tide current to go out to sea rather than back along the beach, spit gets shorter
Effects of storm in 1978
Materials deposited in a bar, constructive waves cant return them
List 4 coastal management strategies
- In 1970 400,000m3 dredged from harbour and placed on ocean side to replenish beach
- Three groynes were contructed
- dunes have been protected by fences and pedestrian walks, attempted to reduce rabbit population whih eats vegetation
- Dunes were planted with marram grass and pngao
