An ability or capacity of something to be maintained or to sustain itself, achieving current needs without jeopardising the potential for people to meet their needs.
What is Environmental Change?
A change or disturbance, most often caused by human influences and natural processes.
Define Overfishing
The removal of a fish species from a body of water at a rate greater than the population can renew itself.
What is Ecological Footprint?
Amount of land and natural resources we need to support the production of what we consume.
Define Coral Bleaching
Heating of waters can cause stress to the coral causing it to die
What is Human Wellbeing?
The ability for people to have access to all basic necessities to live a happy, healthy content life.

- humans are the most important species and can manage nature to meet their needs using technology
- environmental problems will be resolved with technology
- unlimited potential for economic growth
- success depends on managing the earth for our benefit

- humans are a part of nature and are dependent on it
- earth exists for all species not only humans
- resources are limited and not to be wasted and humans should preserve them
- economic growth comes from sustainability
What is Spatial Variation?
Refers to the arrangement of geographical phenomena across the world’s surface
What is the Happy Planet Index and how is it calculated?
The HPI combines 3 elements to show how efficiently residents of different countries are using environmental resources to live long and happy lives. Calculated through wellbeing, life expectance, and ecological footprint.
What is Gross National Happiness and how is it calculated?
The concept implies that sustainable development should take a holistic approach towards nations of progress and give equal importance to non-economic aspects of wellbeing. Calculated through; psychological wellbeing, health, time use, education, cultural diversity and resilience, good governance, community vitality, ecological diversity and living standards.
What is the Human Development Index and how is it calculated?
HDI is a measure of the education, health and wellbeing of a country.
