Geography Flashcards
Natural Hazards
What is a natural hazard?
Natural hazards are extreme natural events that can cause loss of life, damage property and disrupt human activities.
How many types of natural Hazards are there and give examples
The two types of main natural hazards are Geological and Meteorological.
What are Geological Hazards caused by and give examples.
Caused by land and tectonic process.
Examples are: Volcanoes and earthquakes.
What are Meteorological Hazards caused by and give examples?
Caused by weather and climate.
Examples are: tropical storm and extreme weather (Heatwaves)
What is a hazard Risk?
A hazard risk is the PROBABILITY of PEOPLE being affected by a hazard in a PARTICULAR AREA.
What are the several factors that can affect the Hazard Risk from Natural Hazards? Give examples
1) Vulnerability
The more people there are in an area the more probability they will be affected. e.g. An area with high population like Bangladesh is vulnerable to flooding caused by extreme weather.
2) Capacity
The better the population can cope with an extreme event the lower risk they can be affected. e.g. HIC (Higher Income Countries) can cope more as they can afford to build flood defences and evacuate people.
3) Nature of Natural Hazards
Type of risk can vary from one can be greater than the next. e.g. TIME with tropical storms can be monitored and people given warnings to evacuate, but with earthquakes can happen quickly, so no warning or time to evacuate people.
FREQUENCY - some natural hazards occur more often so are higher risks.
MAGNITUDE - severe natural hazards tend to have the greatest effects e.g. the larger the magnitude the more people that are likely to die.
