What is the Richter scale
A numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake on the basis of seismograph oscillations. The more destructive earthquakes typically have magnitudes between about 5.5 and 8.9; it is a logarithmic scale and a difference of one represents an approximate thirtyfold difference in magnitude.
Largest earthquake ever recorded
The largest earthquake ever recorded was a magnitude 9.5 (Mw) earthquake that occurred in Chile on May 22, 1960. This earthquake, also known as the Great Chilean earthquake or the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, happened at a subduction zone where the Pacific plate meets the South American plate. The earthquake triggered a tsunami that caused destruction along the coast of Chile and in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines.
Who invented Richter scale
Charles Richter in the 1930’s for measuring the size of earthquakes occurring in southern California using relatively high-frequency data from nearby seismograph stations.
