Q

Describe Field Sketches

A

I took field sketches of houses in both Baker Street in the Inner City, and Newburgh Drive in the Suburbs. I observed and noted the key features of the buildings in both of the areas, and added labels to the sketch.

Q

Describe Environmental Quality Index Survey

A

I carried out the Environmental Quality Index Survey. I observed the areas of Ann Street in the Inner City and Newburgh Drive in the Suburbs, and rated the quality of the area from -2 to +2, with -2 being the worst and +2 being the best, based on factors such as buildings, traffic, and shops and services. I then used this information to compare the areas based on each of these categories, to find out which would be a better area to live in.

Q

Why are there lots of pedestrians in the Inner City?

A
  • Close to shops and services as there were no cars in the 1900s.
  • No private parking so people are encouraged to walk or take public transport.

Q

Why are there very few lorries in the Inner City?

A

-Grid-iron Street pattern, narrow roads, and cars parked on the street make it difficult for lorries to navigate.
-People live close to the CBD so do not need to get things delivered.

Q

Why are there lots of Cars and Taxis in the Suburbs?

A

-The Suburbs are far away from the CBD, and so people must use cars to travel to shops and work.
-Parking is available as driveways and/or garages in almost all of the houses in the Suburbs, allowing families to own more cars.
-There is a high car ownership in the Suburbs as people can afford to buy multiple cars per family, causing higher levels of traffic.

Q

Why is there a lot of open space in the Suburbs?

A

-The land is very cheap in the Suburbs, meaning residents can have gardens in all of their houses.
-There are also lots of open space in the form of forests and parks as houses in the suburbs are mainly bought by families with children, and so facilities such as parks will be built.

Q

Why is there not a lot of range of shops in the Suburbs?

A

-People living in the Suburbs own cars, meaning they are willing to travel into the CBD to visit shops. This means that there are only a few shops within walking distance of houses, and most of these consist of convenience stores and other food shops.

Q

Why is there a lot of Public Transport in the Inner City?

A

-There are limited parking spaces in the Inner City, and so people do not want to use cars as they do not want to park on the streets where cars can be damaged. This means people must use public transport to travel, as they do not have cars.
-There are LEZ’s and bus gates in the CBD, which only allow buses, taxis, and cars with very low emissions, meaning people are encouraged to take public transport when travelling into the CBD.

Q

Why is the Condition of Buildings bad in the Inner City?

A

-Abandoned buildings and factories do not have any security (CCTV, cameras, etc.), meaning these buildings are damaged, vandalised, and set fire to.
-They are also in a bad condition as most of the houses are rented, meaning residents are less likely to repair or maintain their houses as they do not own them.

Q

Write the conclusion

A

On one hand, the Suburbs would be better to live in than the Inner City, as there is lots of open space, such as gardens and parks, and spaces to park cars which provide transport to other areas of the city. However, the Inner City could be better to live in because there is less traffic from cars, and more public transport to travel in, as well as lots of shops and services within walking distance of houses. Overall, I think that the suburbs would be a better place to live as there is more open space and has space to park cars off of the street.

17
Q

Why would the Suburbs be nicer to live in?

A

There is lots of open space, such as gardens and parks, and spaces to park cars which provide transport to other areas of the city.

18
