Geography Flashcards
Winkel Tripel Projection
*Most general reference world maps are this projection
*Provides a good balance between the size and shape of land areas as they are shown on the map
Robinson Projection
Has minor distortions
East and Western edges of the map are accurate but the polar areas appear somewhat distorted
Goode’s Interrupted Equal Area Projection
Globe is cut apart and laid out flat
Shows the true size and shape of Earth’s landmasses but distances are genrally distorted.
Mercator Projection
Once the most commonly used projection
Increasingly distorts size and distance as it moved away from the equator. Makes areas such as Greenland and Antarctica look much bigger than they would be on a globe.
Accurately shows true directions and shapes of landmasses (useful for sea travel)
Latitude
Circles the Earth Parallel to the Equator
Measures the distance North and South of equator in degrees
Equator
Measured at 0 degrees Latitude
North and South Pole
90 degrees latitude
Longitude
Circles the Earth going through the poles ( N and S)
measure distances east or west of the starting line which lies at 0 degrees longitude and called PRIME MERIDIAN
Absolute location
Found by naming Long. and Lati. lines and where they cross exactly.
