What is a cold environment?
A cold environment is an area of land that is permenantly covered with ice and covered with ice sheets with frozen soil. The temperature is constantly below freezing
Why are cold environmets located near the poles?
Because we think that the sun’s radiation must travel through even more atmosphere to reach the poles unlike other continents meaning that the sun’s heat will be lost
Why do high altitudes affect the temperature?(hint: think about where the sun is heating up)
Because the sun heats up the air on the fround but since the high altitudes are too high up then the heat wont be able to reach the peak
What is the ablation zone?
The ablation zone is where there are outputs from the glacial budget
What is the accumulation zone?
The accumulation zone is where there are inputs into the glacial budget
What happens when the input is greater than the output in a glacier?
The glacier advances
What happens when the output is greater than the input in a glacier?
The glacier retreats
