Geographical systems and models Flashcards
Positive feedback
Effects of an action are amplified by secondary effects.
Negative feedback
Effects of an action are nullified by subsequent effects.
System
An assemblage of interrelated parts that work together by way of some driving force.
Elements
Physical objects existing in a system
Attributes
Characteristics of the elements that can be perceived and measured e.g. mass or temperature
Relationship
The associations between elements and attributes based on cause and affect
Closed system
System where there is no gain or loss of matter, only energy is transferred between the system and its surroundings. e.g. global hydrological cycle
Open system
A system where both matter and energy can be transferred between the system and its surroundings e.g. hydrological cycle in a drainage basin
Isolated system
Neither matter nor energy can enter or leave the system only e.g. entire universe
Dynamic Equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium refers to the maintenance of a balance in a natural system, despite it being in a constant state of change. The system has a tendency to counteract any changes imposed on the system in order to keep this balance, which is achieved by inputs and outputs constantly changing to maintain the balance
