Being surrounded by mountains, Sparta was easily defendable. Both mountain ranges could only be crossed by a series of narrow passes.
Furthermore, the coastline to the south was rugged and marshy; enemy invaders could not easily land there.
These natural defences made the Spartans feel they had no need for city walls.
