Geographical Investigation Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of GI
Stage 1: Pre-fieldwork
Stage 2: Data collection
Stage 3: Post-fieldwork
What is required in a formulation
- Hypothesis
- Guiding question
- Independent and dependent variable
What does one use to measure CLOUDS?
an Oktas Chart
What does one use to measure RAINFALL?
Rain Gauge
What does one use to measure WIND SPEED?
Anemometer
What does one use to measure AIR PRESSURE?
Barometer/Aneroid Barograph

Wind Vane
What does one need to include in a recording sheet when recording data?
- Variables
- Date/Day/Time
- Location (if applicable)
- Wind rose (a chart to record wind direction) [if required]
What are the 3 types of graph used for the data collected presentation?
- Scatter graph
- Line graph
- Simple/ Comparative bar/ line graph
What to remember when drawing ANY graph
- Title w/ Date n Location
- Axis must be labelled
- A clear legend to show what is on the graph
- X axis (INDEPENDENT), Y axis (DEPENDENT)
How does one conclude the investigation?
- Check if the HYPOTHESIS is acceptable/valid
OR
-Comment on the GUIDING QUESTION if it’s acceptable or rejected
How does one check if the data collected is ACCURATE?
- SITING of the instrument (where its used)
- HANDLING of the instrument (how its used)
- READING of the instrument
How does one check if the data collected is RELIABLE?
- Is the sample size interviewed SUFFICIENT?
- How OFTEN is the data collected?
- Was the weather ALRIGHT when the data was collected? If there was rain, would it AFFECT the data collection?
- Were there DIFFERENT points of exit or entrance? Would it affect the data collected?
